Santa Cecilia Orchestra Announces 2010-11 Season
The Santa Cecilia Orchestra proudly announces programming for its 2010-11 season. Marking its 18th anniversary, under the direction of Sonia Marie de Leon de Vega, the Orchestra will produce five concerts this season.
The 2010-11 Season is as follows.
“Opening Season Celebration and
Fundraiser at Center for the Arts”
Friday, October 15, 2010, 8:00 pm
Center For The Arts, 2225 Colorado Blvd., Eagle Rock
Program: Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and music from around the world.
Come and help us kick off our 18th season and our first annual fundraiser.
This concert and fundraiser will feature the string orchestra performing music in an intimate setting. Maestra De Leon de Vega will conduct and speak about the music and the orchestra’s programs. This is your chance to enjoy the interplay and spontaneity of the orchestra in some intimate moments. Soloists: Mark Menzies, violin, and Salpy Kerkonian, flute.
The evening begins with a wine and cheese reception, followed by the concert, and concludes with delicious desserts and a silent auction.

Maestra De León de Vega conducts two passionate masterworks, Brahms’ Third Symphony, and Vieuxtemp’s Violin Concerto with brilliant Sphinx Competition winner virtuoso Danielle Belen. Also featured is Mendelssohn’s Herbride’s Overture, which combines mesmerizing instrumental writing with the swirling visual soundscapes of a sea voyage. Unleash your passion for the orchestra!

Associate concertmaster Yi-Huan Zhao and SCO cellist Beth Park- Zhao join our special guest artist, pianist Natasha Marin in an enjoyable evening. These artists will astound and dazzle you with their virtuosity and passion, playing chamber music masterpieces. The concert will feature music for solo piano as well as duets and end with the dazzling Mendelssohn trio. Intimate. Compelling. Unforgettable.

Baroque and Tango? It doesn’t get better than this! Every year we take great pride in featuring our own orchestra musicians as soloists. Maestra De Leon de Vega, the string section of the orchestra and SCO Soloists explore time (Baroque) and place (Argentina) in a chain of gem-like pieces for string orchestra. Soloists include Concertmaster Melissa Phelps, principal flute Salpy Kerkonian and Alexander Kalman.
In this concert, you’ll hear the individual talents of SCO musicians in repertoire ranging from the virtuosity of Vivaldi to the genius of Bach and the passion of tango master Astor Piazzolla. We also welcome the celebrated radiance of our special guest artist, pianist Natasha Marin.

Santa Cecilia Orchestra once again celebrates the glory of Mexico! SCO plays music of great Mexican composers! That doesn't happen every day, but it does happen every year. The orchestra has a long history of celebrating the talent of Mexico and other Latino composers. So with great pride we present music of Daniel Catán, Mexico's pre-eminent living composer. Our 80-piece symphony orchestra will include 12 percussionists to perform Silvestre Revueltas’ La Noche de los Mayas (The Night of The Mayas). La Noche de los Mayas hurls itself at an audience like a Mexican Rite of Spring. Extravagant sonorities, panoramic scene-painting, and driving rhythms abound in this magnificent work. Que Viva Mexico!

Sonia Marie De Léon de Vega, conductor
Recognized as a noted symphony and opera conductor, De Léon de Vega has achieved distinction as a creative and consummate musician, as a woman in a groundbreaking career role, and as a leading influence in the growing Latino culture in the United States. She was the first Hispanic classical artist to ever be featured internationally on the Univision network’s signature “Orgullo Hispano” (Hispanic Pride), which highlights the most successful Hispanics in the world. De Leon de Vega is also celebrated in educational circles for creating the dynamic Discovering Music program that continues to change the lives of thousands of youth each year through the power of music education. She has received numerous awards and recognitions and is featured in the Simon & Shuster book Latina Power by Ana Nogales.
